Salwa is a Nubian woman who seeks to resurrect a craft that – like many other Egyptian crafts- is facing extinction. This craft, which is considered one of the most famous Egyptian and Nubian crafts, is Wicker and embroidery.
The idea of reviving this craft was not implemented until Salwa took a training course in handmade crafts which was given to her by a foreigner instructor. That made Salwa jealous for her heritage, and encouraged her to be the one to resurrect this craft. So, she joined The Nubian House for Heritage Handcrafts that works on reviving the Nubian heritage. Moreover, she proposed the idea to the European Union, and when it was approved, more than 300 Nubian women were trained on making wicker handcrafts.
Salwa succeeded in marketing her products all over Egypt, and her wicker and embroidery project became a source of income for the women she trained. And to save this craft from extinction, she trained young girls to carry on her mission.
Salwa’s dream is for the handmade Nubian crafts, especially wicker and embroidery, to spread all over the world.
